The Best and Easiest Way to Fix a Blown Out Speaker

Stereo speakers are built to last. Every time you turn them on they are submitted to abuse and punishment, even more so depending on the type of music you listen to. For example, music with heavy bass shakes everything in your home. Imagine what is going on in the speaker cone.

Even the best, quality stereo speakers are bound to crackle from all of this abuse over time. When that happens, you may have the chance to save yourself some money by repairing those broken speakers instead of buying new ones.

It all starts with finding the problem causing the sound problems. It can be an enclosure damaged or maybe it blew out from an electrical or thermal fuse. Problems with the voice coil are a common problem, sometimes the crossover network is faulty and even problems as easy as a solder connection can be the cause of your problems. Whatever your speaker issue maybe, it can be fixed. Here is a breakdown of how you can repair a speaker that is blown out.

The first thing you need to do is figure out which speaker is giving you problems. You can easily do this by playing around with the stereo's equalizer. Alter the balance and the fader to isolate the speaker causing the distortion in sound or if there is no sound at all. Be sure not to have the volume blasting or you run the risk of blowing out a good speaker.

Once you've figured out which speaker is the bad one, you now need to take it apart. Try to do this step carefully because you don't want to cause further damage to a part which is working fine. Remove the faceplate of the speaker and then gently loosen the seams of the speaker's fabric without tearing it.

Now that the speaker cone is visible, you can begin repairing it. Have some tape or glue handy since this is what you will primarily be using if the cone of the speaker is punctured or torn. You'll want to make sure the hole or tear is completely covered before moving on to the next step.

Test the voice coil to see if it is damaged in any way such as if it melted at some point for example. If there is even the tiniest of gaps in the coil, no sound will flow from the speaker or it will sound extremely distorted, depending on the size. If you see that the voice coil is indeed melted, then just replace the speaker entirely.

If you're going to need any replacement parts, now is the time to order them. They can either be found directly from the manufacturer but they can be expensive or from stereo specialties shops. An often overlooked fact is to know the part number or numbers of the pieces you are looking for. They are normally located on the inside of the speaker or backside of the cone. Doing so will make your life an awful lot easier.

Now that you have all parts you need to properly fix the speaker, take a look at how the damaged part is attached to the speaker. Once you remove the broken piece, you are going to need to install the new one the same way.

Now that you are all completed putting the speaker back to together, the only thing left to do is test to see if all your hard work paid off. Hook it back up to the stereo and test it at a low volume slowly turning the volume up to see if it can handle. If the speaker is still not working and you feel like did everything correctly, take it to a professional and let them fix it from there.

How To Program RCA Remote Codes

RCA remote codes are needed to program your RCA universal remote to operate your selected electronic device. When you have done this process you can control any electronic device brand. You can control DVD's, VCR's, and TV's through on single remote control device. RCA remote codes can be found as a pre-set program in the RCA universal remote control device. The pre-set program for television sets are TV-000, the pre-set programs for VCR's are VCR-000, and if you have a cable box the pre-set program for that is cable box-000. There is also a pre-set program available for auxiliary devices. The code for this is VCR-037.

There are different RCA remote codes that you need to use when you are going to set up different brands of electronic devices. For instances such as this, you can use two programming options for your RCA universal remote. The programming options that you can use are the code search feature and the code list feature. The code search feature is ideal when you can't find the code for the electronic device that you want to operate. Each of these programming options make use of RCA remote codes.

Also note that the remote may already be setup, to check the status use the following codes:

TV-000
VCR-000
Cable Box-000
AUX is programmed with VCR code 037

When you choose to set up RCA remote codes using the code search feature, you must first turn the electronic device that you want to control on. You will see a code search button on the remote. Press on it and hold down. After doing this, release the button and press the on/off button continuously. Continuously press the on/off button making one press for every second that passes. When the electronic device that you have selected turns off, you must press the enter button. When you do that then the RCA remote codes set up is done.

The other RCA remote codes programming feature is the code list. To set up your RCA universal remote control using this feature, you must first check the user's manual that comes along with the remote control. If there is a chance that you have misplaced it and can't find the user's manual, you can check out the code list on the RCA universal remote website. To find it just type RCA universal remote to a search engine. To set up your remote, turn on the electronic device and press code search. Afterwards, press the number of the electronic device. Enter the number code of the brand and release the code search button. You have successfully programmed the RCA remote codes.

Basic Comparison: AnalogTV, SDTV, EDTV, and HDTV

There was a time when we had only one choice while buying a TV, i.e conventional Analog TV or CRT TV. But today we have so many choices. First of all we have our conventional CRT (cathode ray tube) TV. Along with this we have new choices like HDTV, EDTV and SDTV. But what is right for you? What are the main differences in them? Let's try to understand the very basics about each of them.

Conventional Analog TV:
First of all let's talk about our conventional CRT TV. Video screens of CRT TV contain 525 lines of resolution, although only 480 lines are displayed. These lines get painted with "interlacing" technique. In this technique first it paints all the odd numbered lines from 1 to 479. Immediately after that it paints all even numbered lines from 2 to 480. This standard analog TV format represents as 525 interlaced or 525i, this also represents with term "480i". The aspect ratio of the screen is 4:3. This TV has inbuilt NTSC tuner, so by default they can't tune Digital TV broadcast.

Analog TV:
With NTSC broadcasting was dominating since last 50 years. But it is time when DTV (Digital TV) gradually replacing the Analog one. Digital television is a new type of broadcasting technology that offers television with movie-quality pictures and Dolby digital surround sound, along with a variety of other enhancements. This Digital TV works with ATSC broadcasting instead of NTSC. Currently there are three types of digital broadcast signal: SDTV, EDTV and HDTV. Aspect ratio for DTV is 16:9.

SDTV:
Like Analog TV, SDTV also 480i. Here's the advantage compared to Analog - SDTV can receive digital broadcast signals.

EDTV:
So far 480i resolution TVs worked fine. That is because TVs sizes are limited to 19 inch or 20 inch. But limitation of 480i resolution surfaced when same technology applies in large screen. Interlacing techniques does not work for larger screen. The visible scan lines and jaggies are annoying. The best solution is to avoid interlacing. Initially Interlacing was invented to save transmission bandwidth. But in current technology transmission in much higher rate is possible. So, there is no need of interlacing. It is possible to paint the lines sequentially from 1,2,3....up to 480, this is called ""progressive scanning". With this technology using same 480 resolution lines we can get better video quality, jaggies can be totally eliminated. This 480 lines progressive scan technique is commonly known as 480p. This concept in the consumer market is known as Enhanced Definition Television, or EDTV.

Both SDTV and EDTV also receive the 16-by-9 broadcasts along with the 4-by-3 aspect ratio.

HDTV:
Even though we have digital broadcasting system SDTV and EDTV, maximum attention attracted towards HDTV. Main advantage here is increased number of scan lines on the screen. HDTV comes with three flavors 720p, 1080i and most recent one 1080p. As the name says first resolution displays 720 lines progressively and in the second one displays 1,080 lines interlaced. If we compare this two, we can say both of them are good. In general 720p is more appropriate for fast action as it uses progressive frames; alternatively 1080i is very good for slow moving picture (probably this is the reason in most of the HDTV show room you can see slow moving movies) . 1080p on the other hand providing an image resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels. This one provides best display compare to other ones. This is because 1080p contains maximum number of pixels compare to other varieties, plus 1080 lines progressively scanned line which considers better then interlaced one.

Vizio Electronics - Quality Or Junk?

In 2006 Vizio was virtually an unknown brand. Fast forward to the second quarter of 2007 and Vizio electronics sold the most LCD TV's compared with any other maker including Samsung and Sony. The total number of LCD televisions that Vizio sold in the USA in Q2 2007 was 606,402. This was 76% more than they sold in quarter one of the same year.

A news story published on February 20, 2009 stated that Vizio ranked second in the US flat panel TV market in the fourth quarter of 2008. They came ahead of Sony and credit goes to increased brand recognition thanks to new marketing efforts.

Wal-Mart is a big seller of Vizio TV's and make up a large portion of their sales. In the US, Vizio took up 14.3% of LCD market sales in Q4 2008.

You can credit Vizio has having a major role in the reduction of LCD TV prices in the past few years. Thanks to them and their cheaper price tags we are also seeing some big name brands dropping their prices - but not quite as low as Vizio.

The stigma that comes attached with a non-recognizable brand as being cheap and low quality is something that Vizio has shrugged off to leap into the place of one of the top selling manufacturers of LCD TV's in the world.

Plasma TV's
Vizio also made plasma televisions however announced in February 2009 that they are going to stop manufacturing plasma TVs in favor or ramping up production of LCD models. You can still buy Vizio plasma models from their website, and they are also currently running a promotion whereby they are giving away $1 million worth of plasma TV's.

Vizio electronics products are of a high quality and consumers can save considerable amounts by choosing their products over the more well known, yet much more expensive (and often no better quality) competitors.
